You Never Know
I always hear that the women didn’t really change much, yet the men did. I heard that you wouldn’t recognize people, and at the same time, would pick up where you left off with others. Well that was certainly true for me last weekend as I flew up to Boston to attend my high school reunion. I won’t tell you how many years it has been (for those of you who know me well, you know the answer) but we’ll just say it has been a long time since I’ve seen lots of my ex-classmates. And yes, a majority of the guys had less hair and/or grey hair, while the women looked “just the same.”
Several months ago, I was in communication with several of my classmates and we decided to organize a reunion (what was I crazy to volunteer for that?). At least with the creation of Facebook & Linked In (& others), we now have more opportunities than before to connect with old friends, and that we did. We created a private Facebook group and posted it on our high school alumni Facebook page, and within several weeks we had more than 100 classmates in the group, and the planning began.
We decided to hold the reunion in our hometown, and had more than 70 people in attendance. It seemed like a majority of people still lived in the area, while several were from New York, New Hampshire or Connecticut, and then there were people like me who flew in from out of state.
We all chatted about what we’ve done since graduation, what we’re doing now, and what we’ve accomplished. We learned about each others families and learned about people who have since passed away (including one on 9/11 who was in one of the towers). What was amusing was that almost everyone had to pull out reading glasses to look at things up close….I’m glad I was not alone in that category! Before we knew it, it was 12:30 and the bar/restaurant was closing, and there we were, many years later, closing out a bar (this time sober though!). Six hours went by very fast and there was not enough time to catch up with everyone. Luckily enough, the friends I am closest to, we stay in touch anyhow and are already planning a mini-reunion of just “us” in the spring.
The night did provide a little opportunity to talk about chiropractic however. I got the typical “oh my back hurts” as someone would bend over after learning what I did. Yet at the same time, I had a great conversation with a friend about why I would adjust a baby (after seeing some things I post on our office Facebook page). This was an opportunity for her to learn that chiropractic is not about back pain, that these infants can get positive results from ear infections, colic, constipation and lack of sleep. Maybe she will now go on and talk to others about chiropractic care and children, and may be able to help someone else.
So when it comes time for your high school reunion, will you go? “You never know how far reaching something you think, say or do will affect the lives of someone else tomorrow”. That saying is true in many ways.
